Lecture Series

Join us tonight, July 14 at 6pSLT (6p PDT = 9p EDT) at Molaskey's Pub for the Guest Lecture Series featuring Cylindrian Rutabaga. Cylindrian Rutabaga, known in the real world as Grace Buford, is one of Second Life's most famous musicians, having played in various venues across the U.S. and in Second Life. Cyl often performs mixed reality events, fusing both real and virtual world audiences. She was featured earlier this year on CNN performing at Filthy Fluno's 'Artropolis'. Cylindrian is this year's SLCC Music Track Performance Co-Chair, along with Lyndon Heart. Join us for an interesting discussion about music in Second Life and the upcoming SLCC.

[18:04]  Nasus Dumart: Welcome to the Guest Lecture Series at Molaskey's Pub!
[18:04]  Nasus Dumart: Tonight we continue the SLCC Music Track category in The Guest Lecture Series, which features the live performers and organizers of the SLCC Music Track.
[18:04]  Nasus Dumart: This year's SLCC is scheduled for August 13-16 at the St. Francis Hotel in beautiful San Francisco.
[18:04]  Nasus Dumart: For those of you unable to attend the events in RL, we are working with the convention leaders to provide a SL destination for avatars to attend - details will be posted as we have them.)
[18:05]  Nasus Dumart: The Guest Lecture Series - The SLCC Music Track was created to generate awareness about the strong music community in Second Life, which is prominently featured in this year's Second Life Community Convention.
[18:05]  Nasus Dumart: We will discuss what it takes to perform in the virtual world and WHY today's musicians and live performers should consider this performance medium as a part of their repertoire.
[18:05]  Nasus Dumart: This will be a type-chat event. I will ask the audience to refrain from room chat until your host and Lecturer have completed their presentations.
[18:06]  Nasus Dumart: At that time, the audience will be encouraged to participate in a period of Questions and Answers.
[18:06]  Nasus Dumart: TIP: prepare your questions on a note card and then copy and paste them into chat at the appropriate time.
[18:06]  Grace McDunnough: (only if you are good)

[18:07]  Nasus Dumart: OK, Let's continue...
[18:07]  Nasus Dumart: When writing 'The Unofficial Guide to Building the Second life Virtual World', I shared a story about my first experience with live music in the virtual world in a section titled 'Hello Out There In Virtual Land' (Chapter 1, page 6).
[18:07]  Nasus Dumart: Quite literally, I was stunned off my seat after hearing a performer simply say my avatar name in real time, welcoming me to their show.
[18:08]  Nasus Dumart: That's when it occurred to me that virtual worlds take us in a whole new direction of performance and online media.
[18:08]  Nasus Dumart: That's when I took SL more seriously, too.
[18:08]  Nasus Dumart: I had that same stunning experience recently, watching 'Musimmersion'.
[18:08]  Nasus Dumart: This time, it wasn't simply interaction with the performer, it was with the environment of the performance.
[18:08]  Nasus Dumart: 'Musimmersion' has raised the bar with performance art.
[18:09]  Nasus Dumart: With set changes in the flash of an eye, where the audience is incorporated into each magnificent setting in tune with each song, it is something NOT to be missed.
[18:09]  Nasus Dumart: The upcoming 5th Annual Second Life Community Convention is scheduled for August 13-16 in San Francisco.
[18:09]  Nasus Dumart: Grace McDunnough is schedule as one of the panel speakers and live performers. Although Grace will not be joining us in San Francisco, she is able to participate remotely.
[18:09]  Nasus Dumart: Her SLCC appearances will be streamed entirely from Second Life.
[18:10]  Nasus Dumart: Grace McDunnough is one of the most visionary musicians I have the great honor of becoming familiar with in my nearly three years in SL.
[18:10]  Nasus Dumart: She is not only a talented musician, 3D builder, performance art producer and friend to many, she keeps a great blog, as well ( http://phasinggrace.blogspot.com ).
[18:10]  Nasus Dumart: Grace writes about her observations of 3D life online.
[18:10]  Nasus Dumart: She discusses 'Social Architecture' and other 'big picture' topics, along with some hot topics of the 'here and now'.
[18:11]  Nasus Dumart: Although Grace has regular SL gigs around SL, specifically at 'Heron Island' and 'The SLip', 'Musimmersion' is produced exclusively on the 'Blank Canvas' sim, owned by the honorable SeanMcPherson Senior. :)
[18:11]  Nasus Dumart: Aside from Second Life and http://phasinggrace.blogspot.com , you can also find Grace McDunnough on Reverbnation, thesixtyone, Facebook, MySpace, flickr and Metaplace.
