Molaskey's, Your Global Neighborhood Pub

Molaskey’s Pub, The Global Neighborhood Pub. It's where everybody knows your name, because it’s type-written over your avatar!
As the popularity of Molaskey's Pub is on the increase, with an upcoming publication and swarms of musicians and fans visiting, we thought we'd take the time to help you become more familiar with the story and the people that formed the foundation of this favorite virtual world Pub.

Molaskey’s Pub was built on a challenge. When Apple Mackay completed ‘Apple Gallery’ and Wichi Riverwalk’ in Wichi (the name of our sim), he was asked if he could build an Irish pub within a two-week time frame for an SL™ developer. They wanted to have it ready for a St. Patrick’s Day opening. Apple, with proud Irish heritage, offered to do it for fifty thousand Linden dollars (less than $200.00 USD). The developer flinched on the offer, giving it to a much less experienced builder for less than half the price. Apple, in disbelief over the developer’s poor decision, challenged himself to produce a high-quality virtually authentic Irish Pub within the same two-week timeframe. Katydid Something, our dear friend and neighbor in Wichi offered him the land on which to do it, enabling him to freely build.

The pub took form in a few days with original textures, photographs, beautiful woodwork and green marble trim and working fireplace. While he was building, Apple opened up the music stream and filled the pub with rhythm and life. Friends would come by to watch in awe as Apple built the pub and played choice music from his impressive collection.

When he was nearing completion, Apple teleported to the site of the pub on the developer’s sim to have a look-see out of curiosity. The developer happened to be there along with the exhausted and humiliated novice builder. The pub they paid twenty thousand Linden dollars for was nowhere near ready for opening. The professional he is, keeping things on good terms, Apple offered some valuable suggestions, which they appreciated. Then, he invited them back to the pub he was building. When they saw the lighting, layout, detail and quality of the build, they were eating humble pie. They chose a few Linden dollars over quality and speed. That’s when Apple emphasized his motto in pricing strategy, “you can have it fast, you can have it cheap, or you can have good quality. Pick two”.

So, with a beautiful pub now built on our friend Katy’s land, and the time we were already investing in SL, we decided we had to make something of it. We formed ‘The Molaskey’s Pub’ group and Katy donated the land to the group.

We opened on St. Patrick’s Day 2007 and dubbed the place ‘Molaskey’s Pub’ after Katydid’s grandfather, who immigrated to the United States from Ireland. Without contention, it’s been Molaskey’s Pub, Moe’s (or Mo’s) for short ever since. Grandfather Molaskey would be very proud indeed.

When you go to Molaskey’s Pub, you gather with friends and engage in chat, however intellectual or nonsensical. Make yourself known. See and be seen. It’s a social place in a social world. This is as comfortable and familiar as any world-class neighborhood pub, in the virtual world. It is either a-buzz with activity or a quiet retreat and that’s just how we like it.

Katydid joined the Live Music Enthusiast group on behalf of Molaskey’s Pub and attended auditions to select musicians to play at the pub every week. It drew a fast and regular stream of traffic to the pub. Before we knew it, we had 500 members in our group. We had our hands full with concerts and events.

These music patrons spend hours socializing at our Pub. Musicians go on every hour for three hours several times a week. While they’re listening to live music, patrons are looking around, clicking on billboards, posters, checking instant messages (Ims), taking snapshots, checking out profiles of other avatars and enjoying quality live music.

Some of the musicians we feature include, but are not limited to - Capos Calderwood, TallGuy Kidd, Lyndon Heart, Skinny Shepherd, Patrick LaSalle, Maximillion Kleene, Dallas Horsefly, Wendy Curtiss, Bara Johnson, Sumtra Oh, BubbaC John  and the lovely Grace McDunnough to name a few.

The Molaskey’s Team:

 Apple MacKay and Nasus Dumart

Apple and Nasus are partnered in Second Life, but we are also married in real life.We have been in Second Life since 2006 and have had the honor of meeting hundreds of interesting people as a result of Second Life. In real life, Apple MacKay is Jay Mahar, and Nasus Dumart is Sue Martin Mahar. Jay is a technology guru and Sue is a freelance writer. Together, we wrote a book about conducting business in Second Life®. Our book,  'The Unofficial Guide to Building Your Business in th Second Life® Virtual World' will be published in Winter, 2009 by Amacom, the publishing division of The American Management Association. Read the book and drop us a line at MolaskeysPub@gmail.com. We'd love to hear your comments!

  Katydid Something
When the opportunity to build a Pub presented itself, it was Katy that enabled and encouraged Apple to do it. Our friendship, combined skills and ability to work so well together are the foundation of Molaskey's Pub. The concerts, the games, long list of friends, the content of the book, most every thing we have built in Second Life®is because of what we started together with Molaskey's Pub. It is the direction we chose collaboratively in ‘Second Life®’. We couldn’t have done so much without Katy’s positive enthusiasm and wisdom.

Katy is responsible for finding most of the musicians that play at Molaskey’s Pub and has been sponsoring the concerts since we started them in 2006. In real life, Katy is a talented singer and performer, she hosts many friends and loving family at her home in Key West, Florida where she and her husband Michael have lived for many happy years.

“Real world advertising executive Kathey Fatica (Katydid Something in SL™) made her first forage into Second Life® in September, 2006, with a curiosity of whether it was something she could market to her clients. Her company, Needham Fatica Advertising Agency, is located in Key West, Florida and works with many clients in the travel and tourism industry. Trying to reach a younger, technologically hip audience with disposable income by using new media has been one of the strategies of the agency.

As to whether Needham Fatica can actually use Second Life to market real life clients, Kathey is considering many innovative ideas. After two years, she comments, “Ah, the night is still young!”. She's right. Many experts predict we are still in the formative years of Second Life.

 Gilly Gully
Gilly is one of Apple’s first friends in ‘Second Life®’. Before I entered SL™, I got to know Gilly through Jay (Apple). Then, when I joined, Gilly became my close friend, too. Though we have never met in real life, I have always had a comfortable friendship with Gilly. She reminds me of a dear real life friend. She is someone I can talk with and rely on and she always makes me laugh, or in the very least, smile. She uses basic good sense in her real life and radically changes her style in Second Life®, because, well, ‘why not?’.

Gilly Gully was born in Second Life on May 18, 2006. After a few months of baby steps and learning the ways of this online universe, Gilly purchased her first land. With her close friends Apple Mackay and Katydid Something, she joined the Wichi group of fine galleries. In early 2007, Gilly opened the first 'Gilly Pad' Bookstore - Second Life’s first and only underwater bookstore. With her printing press and some imagination, she starting writing and selling collections of 55 word stories based on her Second Life experiences. Expanding with a chain of Gilly Pad Bookstores she started publishing other Second Life authors. Gilly now offers a variety of published works available across Second Life.

When not writing and publishing, Gilly spends time at her neighborhood pub, Molaskey’s, generally enjoying the ‘Second Life experience'. She enjoys meeting people and hosting backgammon and other pub games. She is also a 'Devil May Care' game host for Parrothead Cove and  co-owner of 'GR! Thongs ‘n Things' with her Second Life business partner, Rakuen Hayashi.

In the real world, Gilly lives in southwestern Alberta Canada in a small village with her family and several pets. She enjoys living the quiet rural life away from the hustle and bustle of the big city of Calgary, where she grew up. She works in her village general store and volunteers for several town organizations, including her local library board and adult continuing education. She also enjoys playing the piano, reading, watching movies and has achieved a purple belt in Karate. She aspires to finally finishing one her many novel starts and dreams of being a published author as well as getting a black belt in karate and teaching martial arts in her own dojo. You can find more information about Gilly, read some of her short stories and check out some of her photography in her deviantart site, http://chillouweed.deviantart.com/”

 Chester Cournoyer
I met Chester along with Clarissa Dassin at Three Lions Pub in December 2006. I introduced him to Apple, Katydid and Gilly back at Wichi, when they were first building up the Riverwalk and shops. Chester has a way of winning people over with his wit. We all became good friends. That’s the basis of Molaskey’s Pub. Friends, Music, Games. Chester is an essential part of the fun at Molaskey’s. Apple gave Chester permissions to the Pub. He takes care of the décor for events and sends out notices, though he really does much more than that.

Chester created a character with a signature tuxedo he wore everywhere, everyday, all the time. He would kid us and say his other tux was at the cleaners. It was very James Bond-esque of him. Funny, the tux worked in just about every situation, as Chester had anticipated, except, of course at the beach. Even then, an avatar surfing in a tux made a statement.

Chester stated, “I began as an explorer, as many do, but settled in with a group of eccentrics that run a pub and concert events.  I am a landowner, a (gamer), and small-time content creator, but most of all”, he states that he is, “ a lover of fine conversation”.   – Actually, he is a master of fine conversation.

  Mia Kitchensink
Mia came to Apple in 2006 looking to have her portrait taken in the Wichi Studio. She was so impressed with the vibe happening at the Wichi Riverwalk, she rented a shop. She has called it home ever since.

Apple, Katydid, Gilly, Chester, Mia and I palled around getting to know one another. Wichi got built up and the time we spent (watching Apple build) together bonded us all as friends. When we opened Molaskey’s Pub, Mia naturally took on the role as hostess, welcoming everybody in her friendly way. Mia is responsible for building up the Molaskey Group, nearly single handedly. We are extremely grateful for the time and dedication Mia has given Molaskey’s Pub.

Chestnut Rau
Chestnut Rau was born into Second Life on June 16, 2007. Chestnut's main interests are listening to live musical performances, sailing on the beautiful 'Linden ocean', working to build the business at Molaskey's Pub, enjoying the company of her friends and serving as a mentor to new SL™ residents.  Chestnut is a prolific blogger who shares her observations about SL and her in-world photography at http://slofdreams.blogspot.com/

Chestnut is an active supporter of the live music community in SL.  She helps host concerts at Molaskey's Pub and attends shows at other venues across the SL™ grid most every day.  Like many 'SLers', Chestnut loves to be able to regularly enjoy live music in a concert setting, something the pressures of her first life preclude.

After buying and selling several parcels of land in SL™, Chestnut settled comfortably in the 'Sailors Cove Sims', which is a community dedicated to sailing.  She is a member of the Fishers Island Yacht Club and considers herself a novice but dedicated sailor.   Chestnut recently accepted the position of administrator for the brand new Sailors Cove Sims blog which can be found here http://slsailorscove.blogspot.com/

Linden Lab® has a corps of volunteers who are charged with helping residents and are called SL™ Mentors.  Chestnut became an SL™ Mentor in December 07 and especially enjoys helping brand new residents to learn the basics needed to find their way around the the wonderful world of Second Life.

The woman behind Chestnut Rau is a wife, mother and university administrator who lives in the New York City area.

Now that you know a little about us, and our beloved Pub, take the virtual plunge and visit us in Second Life!
